Lake Levico and the spa
The lake and the arsenical waters
In the Valsugana, the valley of the Brenta river east of Trento, Levico Terme is an elegant spa town at about 500 metres, on the shore of a small lake surrounded by wooded mountains. Lake Levico, with its clear water and green banks, is one of the cleanest and most pleasant in Trentino, with beaches, a lakeside path and the possibility of swimming, canoeing and paddle boarding in summer; nearby, the larger Lake Caldonazzo is also a popular destination for swimming and water sports.
The town owes its fame to its thermal waters, unique in Europe: the springs of Vetriolo, on the mountain above, produce a ferrous and arsenical water, rich in iron and arsenic in small quantities, used since the nineteenth century for treatments of the skin, the blood and the nervous system. In the late nineteenth century, under the Habsburgs, Levico became one of the most fashionable spas of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, frequented by the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie of Vienna and Central Europe, with grand hotels, villas and a spa establishment in Art Nouveau style. Of that period remains the beautiful Parco Asburgico, the Habsburg Park, a large historic park with centuries-old trees, exotic plants, avenues and ponds, which in December hosts a charming Christmas market among the trees. Today the Terme di Levico offer treatments and wellness programmes, and the town is a base for walks and bike rides along the Valsugana cycle path, which follows the Brenta river.
Tip: walk along the lake in the evening; the Valsugana cycle path is one of the most beautiful and easy in the Alps, partly downhill towards Bassano.
