Locorotondo

The white circular village and its wine

On a hill at about 400 metres overlooking the Itria Valley, Locorotondo owes its name, "round place", to the circular plan of its historic centre, a ring of white houses built around the top of the hill. It is one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia", and seen from the valley it looks like a white crown above the vineyards and trulli.

The old town is a delight of narrow, spotlessly clean lanes, whitewashed houses with balconies full of flowers and geraniums, and small squares. Its houses have a unique feature: the cummerse, steep sloping roofs with a pointed gable, covered with limestone slabs, which recall the architecture of northern Europe. The Lungomare, as the panoramic promenade along the edge of the old town is called, although it is far from the sea, offers a view over the valley dotted with trulli, vineyards and "masserie", the fortified farms. Locorotondo gives its name to a crisp white wine, Locorotondo DOC, made from Verdeca and Bianco d'Alessano grapes, produced since 1969 by the local cooperative winery and many small producers.

Tip: in summer the village hosts the Locus music festival; the town is a good base for exploring the Itria Valley by bicycle.
