Marettimo

The wildest of the Egadi, a mountain of sea caves and trails

The most remote of the Egadi Islands, Marettimo is a limestone mountain rising steeply from the sea to almost 700 metres, covered with Mediterranean scrub, pines and rare endemic plants. There are no roads for cars, only a small fishing village of white and blue houses and a network of trails leading to the Roman remains of the Case Romane, the Punta Troia castle and the lighthouse.

The coast is famous for its sea caves, more than four hundred: by boat you can visit the Grotta del Cammello, with its small beach inside, the Grotta del Tuono and the Grotta della Bombarda. The waters, part of the Egadi marine protected area, are among the clearest in the Mediterranean and a paradise for divers.

Tip: the island is reached by hydrofoil from Trapani in about an hour; the local fishermen offer boat tours around the island, including lunch with fresh fish.
