The butterfly-shaped island of the Egadi, with Cala Rossa and the Florio tuna factory
A thirty-minute hydrofoil ride from Trapani, Favignana is the largest of the Egadi Islands, shaped like a butterfly and almost flat, perfect to explore by bicycle. Its coast alternates turquoise coves and old tufa quarries, where the stone used for building was cut by hand, creating geometric walls and caves along the sea.
Cala Rossa, named after the blood of the battle of 241 BC between Romans and Carthaginians, and Bue Marino have some of the clearest water in Sicily. In the village, the former Florio tuna factory, a masterpiece of industrial architecture of the nineteenth century, is now a museum that tells the story of the mattanza, the traditional tuna fishing that made the island famous.
Tip: rent a bike at the port; taste tuna in every form, from bottarga to smoked ventresca, and the pane cunzato, bread with tomatoes, cheese and oil.
