A fishing village grown around a tuna fishery on the southern tip of Sicily
Near the southern tip of Sicily, in the municipality of Pachino, Marzamemi grew around a tonnara, a tuna fishery founded by the Arabs and developed in the seventeenth century by the princes of Villadorata. The old buildings of the fishery, the warehouses of the fishermen and the church of San Francesco di Paola surround the charming Piazza Regina Margherita, which opens directly onto the sea.
Today the village is a favourite summer destination, with restaurants, wine bars and shops of local products set in the old fishermen's houses. Marzamemi is known for its preserved fish, tuna in oil, bottarga and ciliegino tomatoes of Pachino, and in summer hosts a film festival in the square. The nearby coast offers beaches and the island of Capo Passero.
Tip: come at sunset, when the square fills with life; out of season the village is very quiet and authentic.
