Baroque churches, caves and the police station of Inspector Montalbano
Scicli lies at the bottom of a valley where three gorges meet, surrounded by limestone hills dotted with caves that were inhabited until the twentieth century, such as the Chiafura quarter. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, the town is a gem of Sicilian baroque, part of the UNESCO site of the Val di Noto; the writer Elio Vittorini called it "perhaps the most beautiful town in the world".
The elegant Via Francesco Mormino Penna is lined with churches and palaces, among them Palazzo Beneventano, decorated with grotesque masks and Moors' heads. The town hall, the Palazzo di Città, is famous worldwide as the "police station of Vigata" in the TV series Inspector Montalbano, and the commissioner's office can be visited. On a hill above the town stands the church of San Matteo, the old cathedral.
Tip: in spring the festival of the Madonna delle Milizie re-enacts a legendary battle with the Saracens; the beaches of Sampieri and the ruins of the Fornace Penna are nearby.
