A small Irpinian village among the most beautiful in Italy
On a rocky spur at the eastern edge of Campania, where the region borders Apulia and Basilicata, Monteverde is a tiny village of a few hundred inhabitants and one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia". From its heights the view sweeps over the valley of the Ofanto river and the lake of San Pietro, and on clear days as far as Mount Vulture.
The village is crowned by a Norman castle, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, which hosts exhibitions and events. Its lanes of stone houses, steps and arches lead to the cathedral of Santa Maria della Natività and to panoramic viewpoints. Monteverde is particularly attentive to accessibility: it was among the first villages in Italy to equip its routes and monuments for people with disabilities, with ramps, tactile paths and audio guides, receiving international recognition. In summer festivals and medieval re-enactments animate the village. The surrounding countryside offers walks among wheat fields and wind farms.
Tip: combine the visit with the nearby villages of Aquilonia, with its open-air ethnographic museum, and Bisaccia.
