Numana

The seaside village of the Conero

At the southern end of the Riviera del Conero, where the white cliffs of the mountain give way to sandy beaches, Numana is a lively seaside village, one of the most popular in the Marche, divided into two parts: the upper town, on the cliff, an old village of fishermen with narrow lanes, small squares and panoramic terraces over the sea, and the lower part, with the port, full of boats and yachts, the beaches and the seafront. The two parts are connected by the Costarella, a picturesque stairway of brick steps, lined with colourful houses and flowers, one of the most photographed places in the village.

Numana has very ancient origins: it was an important centre of the Picenes, the people who lived in the Marche before the Romans, and a port for trade with Greece, as shown by the rich finds from its necropolis, including Greek vases, amber, bronzes and jewellery, displayed in the Antiquarium Statale, the archaeological museum of the town. In the upper town stands the Sanctuary of the Crucifix, which preserves an ancient wooden crucifix, venerated by the fishermen. From the port of Numana, in summer, boats leave for the Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle and the other beaches of the Conero that can only be reached by sea, and for tours along the coast, among cliffs, caves and coves. The beaches of Numana and the nearby Marcelli are long and sandy, ideal for families, while to the north, towards Sirolo, the beaches become wilder and pebbly.

Tip: walk up the Costarella at sunset; book the boat to the Due Sorelle at the port in the morning.
