The Conero Riviera and Sirolo

The Due Sorelle beach

South of Ancona, the Monte Conero, a limestone promontory about 570 metres high covered with Mediterranean scrub, holm oaks and pines, plunges into the Adriatic with white cliffs, creating the most beautiful stretch of the Marche coast: the Riviera del Conero, protected by a regional park, with beaches of white pebbles, coves and crystal-clear turquoise water, in contrast with the long sandy beaches of the rest of the Adriatic. On a cliff at the foot of the mountain stands Sirolo, an elegant medieval village, one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia", with lanes, small squares and a large panoramic square, a belvedere overlooking the sea and the coast, and a small eighteenth century theatre.

Below Sirolo lie some of the most beautiful beaches of the Adriatic, such as Urbani and San Michele, reachable on foot, and the famous Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle, the Beach of the Two Sisters, a small white beach at the foot of a tall, wild cliff, named after the two twin rocks that rise from the sea in front of it, a symbol of the Conero; it can be reached only by boat, from the ports of Numana and Ancona, since the path that once descended from the mountain is closed for safety reasons. The Conero park is also crossed by panoramic paths among the woods, with views of the sea and the coast, and its hills produce the red wine Rosso Conero, from Montepulciano grapes. In summer, Sirolo hosts concerts and theatre performances in the Cava, an old quarry transformed into an open-air theatre.

Tip: book the boat to the Due Sorelle in advance in summer; go early, as the beach is small and access is limited.
