Plan de Corones and Lumen
The museum of mountain photography on the summit
Above Brunico, in the Val Pusteria, the Plan de Corones (Kronplatz), at about 2,275 metres, is a mountain with a rounded, flat summit, reachable by cable cars from several sides, which is one of the most important ski areas in South Tyrol, part of the Dolomiti Superski, and in summer a superb panoramic terrace. From the top, the 360-degree view embraces the peaks of the Dolomites, from the Sasso della Croce to the Marmolada, and the Zillertal glaciers on the border with Austria. On the summit stands the Concordia 2000 bell, one of the largest in the Alps, which rings every day at noon for peace.
The summit has also become a place of culture, thanks to two museums of contemporary architecture. Lumen, the Museum of Mountain Photography, opened in 2018 in the former station of the old cable car, renovated and expanded, tells over four floors the history of mountain photography, from the first pioneers of the nineteenth century to the present day, with images, installations, a "mirror room" with a window on the panorama and a gallery dedicated to the photographers of the Alps. Next to it, the MMM Corones, the Messner Mountain Museum designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid and opened in 2015, is set into the mountain like a concrete sculpture, with windows that open over the void towards the peaks, and is dedicated to traditional mountaineering and its great protagonists. In winter, a lift system with over 100 kilometres of slopes descends from the summit to the valleys of Brunico, Valdaora and San Vigilio di Marebbe.
Tip: a combined ticket covers Lumen and the MMM Corones; in summer, take the cable car from Riscone or Valdaora.
