A turquoise lake reached on foot
Hidden in a high basin at the foot of the Sorapis massif, at about 1,925 metres, Lake Sorapis is one of the most spectacular natural sights of the Dolomites near Cortina: a small glacial lake of an incredible milky turquoise colour, caused by the fine rock powder carried by the waters of the glacier above, surrounded by grey cliffs and dominated by the slender spire of the Dito di Dio, the "Finger of God".
The lake can only be reached on foot, and that is part of its charm. The classic route, path no. 215, starts from Passo Tre Croci, between Cortina and Misurina, and in about two hours, about 6 km, crosses woods of larch and pine, then runs along ledges overlooking the valley, with some stretches equipped with metal cables and ladders, which require a steady foot and no fear of heights. At the end of the route the lake appears suddenly, next to the Rifugio Vandelli, where you can eat and stay overnight. Because of its beauty, the lake has become very popular, and in summer the path is crowded; access by car to Passo Tre Croci may be limited.
Tip: start very early in the morning to find parking and enjoy the lake in peace; swimming in the lake is not allowed, to protect it. Wear proper hiking boots.
