The colourful houses of the Corricella on the most authentic island of the gulf
The smallest of the islands in the Gulf of Naples, Procida is also the most authentic: a land of fishermen and sailors, less touched by mass tourism than Capri and Ischia. It was Italian Capital of Culture in 2022, and its colours have appeared in films such as "Il Postino" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
Its most famous image is the Marina di Corricella, the oldest fishing village on the island: a cascade of houses painted pink, yellow, blue and white, with arches, external staircases and domes, piled up above a small harbour of boats and nets. From the top, the Terra Murata, the medieval citadel on the highest point, encloses the abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and the former Palazzo d'Avalos, a Bourbon prison until 1988, which can now be visited. The island also has quiet beaches such as Chiaiolella and Pozzo Vecchio, and the nature reserve of the islet of Vivara.
Tip: Procida is small and best explored on foot or by micro-taxi; try the lemon salad and the "lingua di bue", a puff pastry with lemon cream.
