The spas and thermal gardens of Ischia
The island of hot springs and thermal parks
Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, is a volcanic island and one of the most important spa destinations in Europe: over a hundred thermal springs and fumaroles gush from its soil, with waters of different temperatures and mineral content, used since the Greeks and the Romans for health and wellbeing.
The most original way to enjoy them is in the thermal gardens, parks with pools of thermal water at different temperatures, surrounded by greenery and overlooking the sea. The largest and most famous is Poseidon, on the bay of Citara at Forio, with about twenty pools; others include Negombo, in the bay of San Montano at Lacco Ameno, with its botanical garden, and Castiglione and Giardini Eden. There are also free natural spots: the Sorgeto bay at Panza, where hot water bubbles up among the rocks into the sea, and the beach of Maronti, with its steaming fumaroles in the sand and the hot springs of Cavascura.
Tip: the thermal gardens open from spring to October; at the Sorgeto bay go in the evening or in the off season, when the contrast between hot and cool water is most pleasant.
