Riccione

The green pearl of the Adriatic

On the Romagna Riviera, a few kilometres south of Rimini, Riccione is one of the most famous and elegant seaside resorts in Italy, known as the "Perla Verde dell'Adriatico", the green pearl of the Adriatic, for its tree-lined avenues, its parks and gardens and the many villas surrounded by greenery. Born at the end of the nineteenth century as a holiday resort for wealthy families from Bologna and northern Italy, it developed in the twentieth century into a symbol of the Italian summer, with its wide sandy beaches equipped with hundreds of bathing establishments, beach umbrellas in neat rows, sports facilities and playgrounds, and calm, shallow water, ideal for families with children.

The heart of the town is Viale Ceccarini, the elegant shopping street, lined with boutiques, cafés and ice cream parlours, which from the station leads to the sea and comes alive until late at night. Among the historic buildings is Villa Mussolini, the holiday home of the dictator's family, now an exhibition venue. Riccione is a capital of summer entertainment, with clubs, beach parties and concerts, and in summer the whole Riviera celebrates the Notte Rosa, a night of events and fireworks along the coast. For families, the town offers theme parks such as Aquafan, one of the most famous water parks in Europe, and Oltremare, dedicated to the sea and dolphins. Behind the coast, the hills of the Valconca, with their villages and castles, are just a short drive away.

Tip: in summer, rent a bike to move along the seafront cycle path; out of season, Riccione is quiet and ideal for walks by the sea.
