The Fellini Museum

The world of the great director

Federico Fellini, one of the greatest film directors of all time, winner of five Oscars, was born in Rimini in 1920, and although he spent his adult life in Rome, his native city, transfigured by memory and imagination, appears in many of his films, from "I Vitelloni" to "Amarcord", whose title in the dialect of Romagna means "I remember". In 2021, Rimini dedicated to him the Fellini Museum, a widespread museum in the historic centre that is not a traditional museum, but an immersive journey into the dreamlike world of the director.

The museum is spread over three places. Castel Sismondo, the fifteenth century fortress of Sigismondo Malatesta, houses the main exhibition, with multimedia rooms, projections, drawings, costumes, photos and objects that tell the story of his films and his imagination, including the "Book of Dreams", the diary in which Fellini drew his dreams for decades. The Palazzo del Fulgor, an eighteenth century palace next to the historic Cinema Fulgor, where the young Fellini discovered cinema and which was restored with sets by Dante Ferretti, is dedicated to his life and his relationship with Rimini. The square between them, Piazza Malatesta, has been redesigned as an urban space with installations and water features evoking his films. Among the other places linked to Fellini are the Grand Hotel, the elegant Belle Époque hotel on the seafront, which for him symbolised luxury and dreams, and the cemetery where he rests with his wife, the actress Giulietta Masina.

Tip: watch "Amarcord" before you go; the Cinema Fulgor still screens films, including Fellini classics.
