The Isonzo River Mouth Reserve
Camargue horses and birds
Where the Isonzo river, after flowing from the Julian Alps through Slovenia and Friuli, flows into the Adriatic, between the Gulf of Trieste and the lagoon of Grado, lies the Riserva Naturale Regionale della Foce dell'Isonzo, one of the most important wetlands of northern Italy, a mosaic of reed beds, salt marshes, tidal flats, freshwater ponds, wet meadows and riverine woods, which is home to an extraordinary variety of birds: more than 300 species have been observed here, including herons, egrets, flamingos, spoonbills, cormorants, ducks, geese and many migratory birds that stop here on their journeys between Africa and northern Europe. The reserve is also known for a curious presence: a herd of white Camargue horses, introduced from France to graze the meadows and help maintain the habitat, which can be seen roaming freely.
The heart of the reserve is the Isola della Cona, in the municipality of Staranzano, with a visitor centre, nature trails, observation huts and towers from which you can watch the birds without disturbing them. The paths, flat and easy, are also suitable for families and can be walked or cycled, and horse rides are organised on the Camargue horses. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, during the migrations, and winter, when thousands of ducks and geese gather in the reserve. In summer, the nearby beaches of the Marina Julia and the Lido di Staranzano offer a place to swim.
Tip: bring binoculars and go early in the morning; visit in spring or autumn to see the migratory birds.
