The sanctuary of the Black Madonna and the lagoons of Marinello
On a headland overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, near Patti, the sanctuary of Tindari keeps the statue of the Black Madonna, a Byzantine wooden figure that, according to legend, arrived by sea, carried by a ship that took refuge in the bay during a storm. The inscription at her feet reads "Nigra sum sed formosa" (I am black but beautiful).
Next to the sanctuary lie the ruins of Tyndaris, a Greek city founded by Dionysius of Syracuse in 396 BC, with a theatre facing the sea, walls, a Roman basilica and houses with mosaics. Below the headland, the Laghetti di Marinello, coastal lagoons separated from the sea by changing sand bars, form a nature reserve of rare beauty: according to legend, they were born when the Madonna saved a child who fell from the cliff, making the sea withdraw.
Tip: the view of the Marinello lagoons from the sanctuary terrace is spectacular; you can walk down to the beach, but the climb back is long.
