A natural pool in the rocks at the tip of the peninsula
North of the town, the Capo Milazzo peninsula stretches into the sea, covered with olive groves, prickly pears and Mediterranean scrub, with views over the Aeolian Islands. It is a protected marine area, and a panoramic road leads to the lighthouse at the tip.
From there, a path of about twenty minutes descends among the rocks to the Piscina di Venere, a natural pool of crystal-clear water enclosed by a ring of rocks, where waves break on the outer edge while inside the water stays calm and turquoise. On the way you pass the Sanctuary of St Anthony of Padua, built in a cave where the saint is said to have taken refuge after a shipwreck in 1221.
Tip: wear proper shoes for the rocky path and come in the morning to avoid the crowds; in rough seas the pool can be dangerous.
