One of the most beautiful gardens in the world
On the hills above Valeggio sul Mincio, near Borghetto, the Parco Giardino Sigurtà is one of the most beautiful gardens in Italy and has been voted among the most beautiful in Europe. It extends over about 60 hectares around a seventeenth century villa, where Napoleon III had his headquarters during the Second War of Italian Independence in 1859. In 1941 the industrialist Carlo Sigurtà bought the estate and, using the right to draw water from the Mincio, devoted forty years of his life to transforming it into a park, which his descendants opened to the public in 1978.
A seven-kilometre panoramic route, which can be covered on foot, by bicycle, by golf cart or by tourist train, leads through a sequence of landscapes: the Grande Tappeto Erboso, a vast lawn; avenues of roses, with tens of thousands of rose bushes; ponds with water lilies and lotus flowers; ancient oaks; a hedge maze with about 1,500 yew trees; the Hermitage; and views over the Mincio valley and the castle of Valeggio. The park is famous for Tulipanomania in spring, with over a million tulips in bloom, as well as for the flowering of irises, hydrangeas and asters, and the autumn colours.
Tip: the best time is from late March to April for the tulips; the park is closed in winter. Combine the visit with lunch in Borghetto.
