Lombards, Romans and witches
Benevento, in the hills of inland Campania, was a Samnite and Roman city and then the capital of a powerful Lombard duchy. Legend made it the city of witches, who gathered under a walnut tree, and the name lives on in the Strega liqueur.
What to see
The Arch of Trajan, from 114 AD, is one of the best preserved Roman triumphal arches, covered in reliefs. The church of Santa Sofia, built by the Lombards in the eighth century with a star-shaped plan, is part of the UNESCO site "Longobards in Italy", with the cloister and the Sannio Museum beside it. The Roman theatre, still used for performances, the Rocca dei Rettori and the cathedral complete the visit.
Food
Strega liqueur and torrone, cecatielli pasta, Sannio lamb and the wines Falanghina, Aglianico del Taburno and Solopaca.
Around Benevento
