Trajan's Arch in Benevento

The best preserved Roman triumphal arch

Benevento, the ancient Beneventum, was an important stop on the Via Appia and the starting point of the Via Traiana, the new road built by the Emperor Trajan to shorten the journey to Brindisi. To celebrate its opening, the Senate erected in AD 114 the Arch of Trajan, which is considered the best preserved Roman triumphal arch in the world.

Made of Greek marble, about 15.6 metres high, it is entirely covered with reliefs celebrating the emperor's deeds: on the side facing the city, his achievements in Rome and in the government of the Empire; on the side facing the countryside, his actions in the provinces, the founding of colonies, the welfare of children and the welcome of foreign envoys. The quality of the sculpture and its state of preservation make it a sort of open-air history book of the Roman Empire at its height. Benevento also preserves a Roman theatre still used for performances.

Tip: look at the arch in the late afternoon, when the light picks out the reliefs; Benevento is famous for the Strega liqueur and the legend of the witches gathering under a walnut tree.
