Things to see in Caltanissetta
The heart of Sicily
Caltanissetta lies in the centre of Sicily, among hills of wheat and the old sulphur mines that made it, in the nineteenth century, the world capital of sulphur. It is an authentic town, far from mass tourism.
What to see
Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of the city, with the cathedral of Santa Maria la Nova, decorated with frescoes by the Flemish painter Borremans, and the church of San Sebastiano. The Palazzo Moncada, never finished, hosts exhibitions. The Mineralogy Museum tells the story of the sulphur mines, and the ruins of the Pietrarossa castle stand on a rock at the edge of town. Holy Week, with the procession of the Vare, is one of the most intense in Sicily.
Food
Torrone, the Amaro Averna, created here in 1868, pistachios and almonds, cassateddi and the peaches of Leonforte nearby.
