The belvedere of Sicily

Enna, almost 1,000 metres above sea level, is the highest provincial capital in Italy. From its rock, the "belvedere of Sicily", you can see Etna and much of the island. In myth, this is where Hades kidnapped Persephone, daughter of Demeter.

What to see

The Castello di Lombardia, one of the largest medieval castles in Italy, has towers with views over the whole island. At the opposite end of the town, the Rock of Ceres marks the site of the ancient temple of Demeter. Between them, the main street leads to the cathedral, with a rich gold-coffered ceiling, and to the octagonal Tower of Frederick II. Holy Week here is spectacular, with thousands of hooded members of the confraternities.
