The Versailles of Italy
Caserta is famous for its Royal Palace, built by the Bourbon kings of Naples in the eighteenth century to rival Versailles. Palace, park, aqueduct and the silk village of San Leucio form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What to see
The Reggia di Caserta, with 1,200 rooms, a grand staircase and lavish royal apartments, is one of the largest royal residences in the world. Behind it, the park stretches for 3 km in a straight line of fountains and pools up to the Great Waterfall, with the English Garden at its side (bikes and shuttle buses help). A few kilometres away, the medieval hamlet of Casertavecchia has a beautiful Romanesque cathedral, and San Leucio keeps the Bourbon silk factory, still active.
Food
Buffalo mozzarella from the Campania plain, the Caserta pizza tradition, the wines Falerno and Asprinio and the sweet pastiera.
