Why visit

Pizza, Baroque churches and the bay. Discover Campania

Chaotic, generous, unforgettable

Naples is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded by the Greeks as Neapolis, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Loud, warm and full of life, it overlooks one of the most beautiful bays in the world, with Vesuvius in the background.

What to see

Walk along Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, the ancient streets that cut through the old town, past churches, street shrines and pizza ovens. In the Sansevero Chapel you will see the Veiled Christ, a marble sculpture that seems made of fabric. Underground Naples reveals Greek and Roman tunnels beneath the streets.

The National Archaeological Museum holds treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum, while the Capodimonte museum has masterpieces by Caravaggio and Titian. Along the seafront stand the Castel dell'Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace, and the Vomero hill offers a view over the whole gulf.

Food

Naples is the home of pizza, and the classic margherita is a must. Also try fried pizza, sfogliatella, babà and the coffee, which here is almost a religion.

Around Naples

Pompeii and Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri, Ischia and Procida, the Sorrento peninsula and the Amalfi Coast are all within easy reach by train or ferry. Naples Capodichino airport is just a few kilometres from the centre.
