Romagna between art and rationalism
Forlì, on the Via Emilia at the foot of the Romagna hills, is a quiet and authentic city, little visited by mass tourism, with a great tradition of art exhibitions and a unique twentieth century urban landscape.
What to see
Piazza Aurelio Saffi, one of the largest squares in Italy, is lined with the town hall, the Palazzo del Podestà and the abbey of San Mercuriale with its tall Romanesque bell tower. The San Domenico Museums, in a former convent, host major exhibitions every year. The Rocca di Ravaldino, the fortress of Caterina Sforza, and the rationalist buildings of Viale della Libertà, part of the ATRIUM European route of twentieth century architecture, complete the visit.
Food
Piadina, cappelletti, passatelli, strozzapreti and the Sangiovese and Albana wines of the hills.
