- Gorizia and its CastleCastles
A city on the border
Gorizia lies on the Isonzo river, right on the border with Slovenia: since 2025 it has shared the title of European Capital of Culture with its twin Nova Gorica. Italian, Slovenian, Friulian and Austrian influences meet here.
What to see
The castle, on a hill above the old town, offers views across both countries. Below it, the Borgo Castello houses the museums of the Great War and of fashion. Piazza della Transalpina, divided by the border, is the place where you can stand with one foot in Italy and one in Slovenia. The church of Sant'Ignazio, the Palazzo Attems Petzenstein and the Viale XX Settembre recall the Habsburg period.
Food
A mix of cultures: gnocchi with plums, goulash, strudel and gubana, plus the great white wines of the Collio.
Around Gorizia
The Collio wine hills, the Karst plateau and the Great War memorials at Redipuglia, Aquileia and Grado on the coast, and Trieste 40 minutes away. Trieste airport is just 20 minutes from the city.
