Things to see in Lecco
Manzoni's lake
Lecco lies where the eastern branch of Lake Como narrows back into the Adda river, beneath the jagged peaks of the Resegone and the Grigne. It is the setting of "The Betrothed", Alessandro Manzoni's great novel.
What to see
The lakefront promenade and Piazza Cermenati form the lively heart of the town. The Manzoni villa, where the writer spent his youth, is now a museum, and a literary trail leads to the places of the novel, such as the "Palace of Don Rodrigo" and the "Lucia's house" in the hamlets. The Torre Viscontea, the Azzone Visconti bridge, built in the fourteenth century, and the Palazzo delle Paure, with its exhibitions, complete the visit.
Food
Missoltini, lake fish, risotto with perch, the polenta taragna of the valleys and the cheeses of Valsassina.
Around Lecco
The Piani d'Erna cable car for views and climbing, the Valsassina, ferries to Varenna and Bellagio, the Adda river trail to Leonardo's locks and Bergamo half an hour away. Bergamo Orio al Serio airport is 40 minutes away.
