A port city with an open spirit
Livorno was created by the Medici as a free port, open to merchants of every faith and nation. This gave it a cosmopolitan character that you can still feel in its canals, its markets and its food. It is the birthplace of the painter Amedeo Modigliani.
What to see
The Venezia Nuova quarter is crossed by canals, best explored by boat, between the Fortezza Vecchia and the Fortezza Nuova. The Terrazza Mascagni, a huge chessboard promenade over the sea, is perfect at sunset. The Mercato Centrale, a vast nineteenth century covered market, the monument of the Four Moors and the Fattori museum in Villa Mimbelli complete a visit. The Montenero sanctuary, above the city, can be reached by funicular.
Food
Cacciucco, the rich fish stew, triglie alla livornese, the chickpea "torta" served in bread, and ponce, a hot coffee drink with rum.
