Things to see in Pisa
More than a leaning tower
Pisa was a powerful maritime republic in the Middle Ages, and its wealth built one of the most famous squares in the world. Today it is a lively university town on the Arno river, easy to explore on foot.
What to see
The Piazza dei Miracoli is a UNESCO site: on a lawn of bright green stand the cathedral, the Baptistery, the monumental cemetery and the Leaning Tower, which you can climb with a timed ticket. But Pisa is more: walk along the Lungarni, see the tiny Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina, Piazza dei Cavalieri designed by Vasari and the old Borgo Stretto with its arcades.
Food
Cecina, a thin chickpea flatbread, baccalà alla pisana, torta co' bischeri and the wines of the Pisan hills.
Around Pisa
Lucca is just 20 minutes away, the beaches of Viareggio and Marina di Pisa, the San Rossore park and Florence an hour by train. Pisa airport, the main gateway to Tuscany, is only a few minutes from the centre by the PisaMover shuttle.
