The city inside the walls

Lucca is enclosed by intact Renaissance walls, more than four kilometres long, which have become a tree-lined park where locals walk, run and cycle. Inside them lies a perfectly preserved city of churches, towers and elegant squares.

What to see

Start with a lap of the walls on foot or by bike. Then visit the cathedral of San Martino, which holds the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto by Jacopo della Quercia, and the white façade of San Michele in Foro. The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, an oval square built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, is one of the most original in Italy. Climb the Torre Guinigi, with oak trees growing on its top, and stroll along Via Fillungo. Lucca is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, whose house is a museum.

Food

Farro soup, tordelli lucchesi, buccellato sweet bread and the olive oil of the hills, among the finest in Tuscany.

Around Lucca

Pisa, the Versilia beaches, the Garfagnana valleys, Bagni di Lucca and the Devil's Bridge at Borgo a Mozzano. Pisa airport is 30 minutes away.
