Between the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento
Salerno lies at the head of a wide gulf, between the Amalfi Coast to the west and the Cilento to the south. Home to the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school of medieval Europe, it is a lively and convenient base for the region.
What to see
The cathedral, founded by the Norman Robert Guiscard, has a crypt covered in baroque marble and the relics of St Matthew. The Lungomare Trieste, one of the longest seafront promenades in Italy, is lined with palms. Climb to the Arechi Castle for the view, walk the medieval Via dei Mercanti and visit the Minerva Garden, the first botanical garden in Europe. In winter the "Luci d'Artista" light festival fills the streets.
Food
Buffalo mozzarella from the Piana del Sele, colatura di alici from Cetara, scialatielli pasta with seafood and limoncello from the coast.
Around Salerno
Ferries and buses to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, the ceramics of Vietri sul Mare, the Greek temples of Paestum, the Cilento with Agropoli and Castellabate and the Certosa of Padula. Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport is 20 minutes away and Naples about 50.
