The light installations that illuminate Salerno in winter
Every year from November to January, Salerno is transformed by Luci d'Artista, the "Artists' Lights", one of the most spectacular light festivals in Europe. Begun in 2006, inspired by a similar event in Turin, it has become the city's main winter attraction, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over Italy.
The streets, squares, gardens and seafront of the centre are decorated with light installations created by artists and designers, often following a theme: enchanted forests, fairy tales, constellations, giant animals, starry skies and hanging chandeliers. The Villa Comunale gardens become a world of illuminated figures, while the Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the Lungomare are lit with arches and luminous carpets. A giant Christmas tree and a large Ferris wheel complete the scene. In the evening the historic centre comes alive with markets, food stalls and street performers.
Tip: weekends are very crowded, especially in December; visit on a weekday evening and combine it with dinner in the old town. Trains connect Naples and Salerno in about forty minutes.
