Wine terraces in the Alps
Sondrio is the capital of the Valtellina, a long Alpine valley carved by the Adda river, where vineyards climb impossibly steep stone terraces on the sunny side and ski resorts fill the peaks.
What to see
The old quarter of Scarpatetti, with its narrow lanes, rises towards the Castel Masegra, home to a museum of the Alps. In the centre, Piazza Garibaldi, the collegiate church and the Palazzo Pretorio stand near the Mallero stream. All around the town the terraced vineyards of Valtellina Superiore produce Nebbiolo wines such as Sassella and Inferno: the Via dei Terrazzamenti trail runs through them.
Food
Pizzoccheri, buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potatoes and cheese, sciatt fritters, bresaola, Bitto and Casera cheeses and the Sforzato wine.
Around Sondrio
Bormio and the Stelvio pass, Livigno, the Valmalenco, Tirano, where the Bernina Express starts its journey to St. Moritz, and Chiavenna. Milan and Bergamo airports are about 2 hours away.
