The city of St Valentine and the waterfall
Terni, in southern Umbria, is an industrial city that grew around its steelworks, but it is also the city of St Valentine, the patron of lovers, and the gateway to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Europe.
What to see
The Basilica of San Valentino keeps the relics of the saint, celebrated every February with events for lovers. The centre has the cathedral, the Roman amphitheatre and the CAOS, a modern art centre in a former chemical plant. Just outside the city, the Cascata delle Marmore, built by the Romans in 271 BC, falls 165 metres in three leaps: the flow is regulated, so check the opening times to see it at full force.
Food
Ciriole, thick hand-rolled pasta, pampepato, the spiced Christmas cake, black truffle from the Valnerina and Umbrian olive oil.
Around Terni
Lake Piediluco, the Valnerina with Ferentillo and Arrone, the Roman ruins of Carsulae, Narni and its underground, Amelia, Spoleto and Orvieto. Rome Fiumicino and Perugia airports are about 1 hour 15 minutes away.
