The lake of the echo
On the border between Umbria and Lazio, a few kilometres from Terni and the Marmore Falls, Lake Piediluco is the second largest natural lake in Umbria after Trasimeno, a quiet, irregular lake with green water, surrounded by wooded hills and mountains, with an indented shape of bays and inlets. On its shore lies the small village of Piediluco, with colourful houses along the water, small boats and fishermen, dominated by the ruins of a medieval fortress on the hill above and by the Gothic church of San Francesco. The lake is fed by the Velino river, whose waters then flow towards the Marmore Falls.
The lake is known as the "lake of the echo": opposite the village, a cone-shaped hill covered with woods, Monte Caperno, reflects sounds with an extraordinary echo, so clear that it repeats entire sentences, a phenomenon that has amazed visitors for centuries; a small platform on the shore indicates the best place to try it. Piediluco is also the home of the National Rowing Centre, where the Italian teams train, and its calm water hosts international competitions. In summer, the lake offers swimming, canoeing, pedal boats and walks along the shore and in the surrounding woods, and in summer the "Festa delle Acque", the Water Festival, is held, with a parade of floating floats. The surrounding mountains offer paths with views over the lake and the Valnerina.
Tip: try the echo from the platform on the shore opposite Monte Caperno; combine the lake with the Marmore Falls, a few kilometres away.
