White limestone waterfalls and free hot pools in the woods of Monte Amiata
On the slopes of Monte Amiata, in the municipality of Castiglione d'Orcia, the tiny spa hamlet of Bagni San Filippo hides one of the most surprising natural sights in Tuscany. A short path through the woods leads to the Fosso Bianco, a stream of hot water rich in calcium that has built up spectacular white limestone formations.
The largest, called the Balena Bianca (white whale), is a great frozen waterfall of calcium carbonate. Below it the warm water collects in natural pools where you can bathe for free all year round, among the trees. In the village a spa hotel offers thermal pools for those who prefer more comfort.
Tip: wear water shoes, as the bottom of the pools is slippery; avoid weekends in high season, when it gets crowded, and leave no trace in this fragile environment.
