A village whose main square is a pool of hot spring water
In Bagno Vignoni, a hamlet of San Quirico d'Orcia, the main square is not paved: it is a large rectangular pool of thermal water at about 50°C, built in the sixteenth century and surrounded by stone houses and the loggia of St Catherine of Siena, who came here to take the waters. In winter the steam rising from the pool makes the scene unreal.
The water flows out of the village through channels that once turned mills, now visible in the Parco dei Mulini, where the stream cascades over the travertine and forms small natural pools below. You can no longer bathe in the square, but there are public free pools at the foot of the village and spa hotels with thermal pools.
Tip: Bagno Vignoni has inspired filmmakers, including Andrei Tarkovsky in Nostalghia; come at dusk, when the square is lit and the day-trippers have gone.
