Carducci's cypresses and the home of the Super Tuscans
In the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, the Viale dei Cipressi runs dead straight for almost five kilometres from the old Via Aurelia to the hamlet of Bolgheri, lined by about 2,500 cypresses. It was made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci, who spent his childhood here and dedicated the poem "Davanti San Guido" to these trees.
At the end of the avenue, Bolgheri is a tiny walled village entered through the gate of the Della Gherardesca castle. The area became world famous in the 1970s with Sassicaia, the first of the "Super Tuscans", red wines made with Bordeaux grapes on the coast. Today the Bolgheri DOC is one of Italy's most prestigious, and many estates offer tastings.
Tip: drive or cycle the avenue slowly, as it is narrow; the wine route continues to Castagneto Carducci, a hilltop village with views over the coast.
