Castel Thun

The castle of the Val di Non

The Val di Non, a wide valley north of Trento covered with endless apple orchards, which produce the famous apples of the Melinda brand, is also a valley of castles, with dozens of fortresses and noble residences. The most beautiful and majestic is Castel Thun, which rises on a hill near the village of Ton, surrounded by orchards and with a view over the valley and the Brenta Dolomites. For over seven centuries it was the residence of the Thun family, one of the most powerful noble families of Trentino and Tyrol, which gave the Church several bishops and princes, and whose descendants are still known today, for example in the field of porcelain.

The castle, of medieval origin, was transformed between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries into an elegant residence, surrounded by a system of walls, towers, bastions and a moat, with a long access avenue crossing gates and drawbridges. In 1992 it was bought by the Autonomous Province of Trento and, after a long restoration, opened to the public in 2010 as one of the sites of the Buonconsiglio museum. Inside, the rooms preserve the original furnishings of the family: paintings, furniture, porcelain, weapons, a rich library and the family archive. The most famous room is the Stanza del Vescovo, the bishop's room, of the sixteenth century, entirely covered with carved Swiss pine wood paneling, with a coffered ceiling, one of the most beautiful examples of Renaissance woodwork in the Alps.

Tip: in spring the apple trees of the Val di Non are in bloom, a spectacle; combine the castle with the sanctuary of San Romedio.
