Termeno and Gewürztraminer
The village of the aromatic wine
Along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, south of Lake Caldaro, Termeno (Tramin) is a wine village of about 3,000 inhabitants, among vineyards that climb the slopes of the Mendola, which has given its name to one of the most famous aromatic white wines in the world: the Gewürztraminer, literally the "spicy Traminer". The Traminer grape has been grown here since the Middle Ages, and from Termeno it spread to Alsace, Germany and other countries, where a variety with pink skin and an intense aroma developed, which returned to its place of origin. The wine has a golden colour and an unmistakable perfume of roses, lychee, exotic fruit and spices, and pairs well with spicy dishes, Asian cuisine and cheeses.
The village is dominated by the Gothic bell tower of the parish church, about 86 metres high, one of the tallest stone bell towers in Tyrol. Just outside the village, the small church of San Giacomo in Kastelaz, on a hill among vineyards, preserves Romanesque frescoes of the thirteenth century with strange fantastic creatures, monsters and hybrid beings, and a splendid view over the Adige valley. Termeno is also famous for the Egetmann Carnival, a centuries-old popular festival held every two years on Shrove Tuesday, with a parade of masked figures, wagons and the symbolic wedding of the "Egetmann Hansl". The local winery and numerous family wineries offer tastings, and a "wine trail" through the vineyards leads to the wineries with explanatory panels.
Tip: taste Gewürztraminer at the source, in one of the wineries of the village; the walk to San Giacomo in Kastelaz is short and panoramic.
