The regional wine shop in Cavour's castle
On a hill among the vineyards between Alba and Barolo, the Castello di Grinzane Cavour is one of the symbols of the Langhe and part of the UNESCO site of the vineyard landscapes of Piedmont. Built in the eleventh century, with a massive square tower, it takes its name from Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the statesman who would become the first Prime Minister of united Italy: from 1832 to 1849 he was mayor of Grinzane, lived in the castle and managed its estates, experimenting with new methods of winemaking with the French oenologist Louis Oudart, which contributed to the birth of modern Barolo.
Today the castle houses the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour, the first regional wine shop in Italy, founded in 1967, where you can taste and buy the best wines of Piedmont, and an ethnographic museum that recreates the life of the Langhe peasants, with the kitchen, the distillery and the old tools, and the rooms of Cavour, with his memorabilia. In the great hall, every year in November, the World Alba White Truffle Auction is held, linked by video to other cities around the world, where the finest truffles are sold for charity. From the castle's terraces there is a beautiful view of the vineyards. The castle also has a restaurant of Piedmontese cuisine.
Tip: the castle is open every day; combine the visit with Barolo and La Morra, a few kilometres away.
