Medieval villages and cellars in the land of the Black Rooster
The Chianti Classico stretches between Florence and Siena, a land of woods, vineyards, castles and villages whose symbol, the black rooster, recalls the medieval League of Chianti. Its Sienese heart is formed by Radda, Gaiole and Castellina in Chianti, the three historic towns of the league.
Radda in Chianti, on a ridge between two valleys, keeps its walls, the Palazzo del Podestà covered with coats of arms and the "ghiacciaia", an old ice house now home to a wine museum. Around it, castles such as Brolio, home of the Ricasoli family who defined the Chianti recipe in the nineteenth century, and Volpaia, a fortified village turned winery, are open for visits and tastings.
Tip: the Chianti roads are winding and wine tastings frequent: designate a driver or join an organised tour.
