A funnel-shaped square and the gentle hills of Chianti Classico
Greve in Chianti is considered the gateway to the Chianti Classico from Florence, along the scenic Chiantigiana road (SR 222). Its heart is the unusual triangular, arcaded Piazza Matteotti, with the statue of the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, born nearby, who explored the bay of New York. Wine shops and butchers, such as the historic Antica Macelleria Falorni, line the square.
All around, the landscape is a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves and woods, with medieval villages such as Montefioralle, a ring of stone houses on a hill a short walk above Greve, and castles turned wineries such as Vicchiomaggio and Verrazzano, which welcome visitors for tastings.
Tip: in September Greve hosts the Expo of Chianti Classico, a wine festival in the main square; the 8 km walk from Greve to Montefioralle and Pieve di San Cresci is a classic.
