Brunelleschi's Dome and Florence Cathedral

Climb the most famous dome of the Renaissance, built without scaffolding from the ground

Santa Maria del Fiore was begun in 1296, but for over a century the hole above its crossing stayed open: nobody knew how to roof such a space. In 1420 Filippo Brunelleschi solved the problem with a double-shelled dome laid in a herringbone brick pattern that supported itself as it rose. It is still the largest masonry dome ever built.

The climb of 463 steps passes between the two shells and right under Vasari and Zuccari's huge Last Judgement, before reaching the lantern and a view over the red roofs of Florence. Giotto's bell tower, next door, offers the best view of the dome itself, with 414 steps.

Tip: the dome climb requires a timed booking, often sold out weeks ahead in high season. The cathedral itself is free; the combined pass includes the Baptistery, the crypt and the Opera del Duomo museum, which holds Michelangelo's Bandini Pietà.
