Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Caravaggio in one of the world's great museums
Built by Giorgio Vasari for the Medici administration (uffizi means offices), the U-shaped building on the Arno became one of the first museums in Europe. Its rooms trace the whole story of Italian painting, from Giotto and Cimabue's golden Madonnas to the Renaissance and beyond.
The highlights are famous: Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Doni Tondo, the only panel painting he finished, Titian's Venus of Urbino and Caravaggio's Medusa. From the top floor corridor, the view of the Ponte Vecchio is one of the classic images of Florence.
Tip: book a timed ticket, arrive early or late in the day, and allow at least three hours. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free, but queues are long.
