Eraclea Minoa

A Greek theatre on a white cliff above a beach of dunes and pines

On a headland of white marl overlooking the sea, at the mouth of the Platani river, lie the remains of Eraclea Minoa, a Greek city founded in the sixth century BC by colonists from Selinunte. Legend links its name to Minos, the king of Crete, who is said to have died here pursuing Daedalus.

The archaeological area includes city walls, houses and above all the theatre, carved into the soft rock and facing the sea, one of the most beautifully placed in Sicily. Below the cliff stretches one of the finest beaches of the south coast: a long strip of golden sand backed by a pine forest and the white wall of Capo Bianco, part of a nature reserve at the mouth of the Platani.

Tip: combine a morning visit to the ruins with an afternoon on the beach; the site is in the municipality of Cattolica Eraclea, about 40 minutes from Agrigento.
