The Doric temples of ancient Akragas on a ridge facing the sea
Founded in 582 BC by Greek colonists, Akragas was described by the poet Pindar as "the most beautiful city of mortals". Its sacred buildings were set along a long ridge south of the city, facing the sea, and today form the Valley of the Temples, one of the largest archaeological parks in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Temple of Concordia, from the fifth century BC, is one of the best preserved Greek temples anywhere, because it was turned into a church in the sixth century. Along the Via Sacra stand the Temple of Juno on its panoramic platform, the eight columns of the Temple of Hercules and the ruins of the colossal Temple of Olympian Zeus, with a reconstructed telamon, a giant stone figure nearly eight metres high. The Kolymbethra Garden is an ancient valley of citrus and olive trees.
Tip: in summer the park opens in the evening, when the illuminated temples are magical; the Pietro Griffo archaeological museum is a short walk from the park.
