Sciacca and its spas

Ceramics, a carnival of giant floats and thermal waters known since antiquity

Sciacca, on the south west coast of Sicily, is a lively fishing town built in terraces above the port. Its thermal waters, sulphurous and hot, have been used since Greek times, and on nearby Monte Kronio natural caves blow out hot steam, the "stufe di San Calogero", used for sweat therapy since prehistory.

The town is famous for its ceramics, colourful majolica that decorate the façades, the benches and the street signs, and for its Carnival, one of the oldest in Sicily, with huge allegorical papier-mâché floats and the burning of Peppe Nappa, the mask of the town. The old town, with Piazza Scandaliato overlooking the sea, the cathedral and Palazzo Steripinto with its diamond-pointed façade, is a pleasant place to stroll.

Tip: near Sciacca, the Castello Incantato is a garden of thousands of carved heads by the folk artist Filippo Bentivegna; taste the fresh fish and the cuddrireddi.
