The elegant Versilia, with its fort, pier and beach clubs
Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the small fort built in 1788 by Grand Duke Leopold to protect the loading of marble from the Apuan quarries, which were shipped from the town's pier. In the twentieth century it became the favourite seaside resort of Italian high society and artists, from Thomas Mann to the Agnelli family.
Today the town is known for its long sandy beach lined with historic beach clubs, the bagni, with their striped tents, the elegant villas hidden among pine trees, the boutiques around the fort square and the famous Wednesday market. Behind the coast, the Apuan Alps rise sharply, white with marble, an unusual backdrop for a day at the beach.
Tip: walk along the pontile, the pier, at sunset; the cycle path along the seafront links Forte dei Marmi to Viareggio.
